What we are
The London Institute for Mathematical Sciences (LIMS) is Britain’s first private institute for theoretical scientific research. It gives
scientists the support and freedom to do what they do best: make fundamental
discoveries.

Why we are necessary
Despite having twice as many Nobel prizes per capita as any other country, until
recently the UK did not have an elite institute for theoretical research,
unlike America and France. Founded two years ago, LIMS attracts the world’s best scientists and enables them to focus on their research without teaching
and administrative commitments.

What we do
What we work on LIMS’ scientists work in all areas of theoretical physics, mathematics and
quantitative biology. Current interests include, but are not limited to:

New scientists LIMS also trains the next generation of scientists through its programme of
postdoctoral research assistants and visiting graduate students, as well as
summer undergraduate research fellowships (SURFs) and work experience for
secondary school students.
